WALT identify the author and the illustrator in the text.

WALT identify the author and the illustrator in the text.

Room 4 has been using all of our reading skills this year, ready for Year 2. Every week we have a new 'test'
about different parts of the book. We have been searching for full stops, exclamation marks, question marks
and commas. This week we are focusing on finding the author and the illustrator. We all had a turn to come up
and point to where the authors name is. Miss Donnell tried to trick some of us and changed the pages!

'I know the author is the writer of the story and they do the words.'

WALT create a wearable piece of artwork

WALT create a wearable piece of artwork.

Our art focus over Term 2 and 3 has been creating a piece of
art we can wear. Miss Donnell introduced us to a song in The Little Mermaid called 'Under the Sea' which was the focus of our art work.

We created our artwork by sketching sea animals in our books and tracing them onto laminated sheets. We coloured them in and created patterns using vivids. Miss Donnell glued them on to tutus and t-shirts for us to wear.

Check out my awesome art piece!

Our Writing Successes

WALT reflect on our 2018 writing.

We looked in our writing books at the first piece of writing
we did this year and the most recent piece of writing.
We talked about what had changed in our writing,
what we have learnt so far and are excited
to learn next year in Year 2.

Something I have learnt in writing this year is how to sound out tricky words.

Something I am proud of in writing this year is writing lots and my pictures are good too.

WALT identify NZ notes and coins

WALT identify NZ notes and coins.

We had Captain Cash from ASB come to visit Room 4.
We learnt lots about saving money, spending money and
sharing money.

Miss Donnell decided to test us and see if we remembered how to sort out the coins and notes from biggest to smallest.

Look at my sorting success!

WALT explore and share ideas about
music from a range of sound
environments.

Room 4 were lucky enough to have Mrs D come
into the classroom to teach a music lesson
about sound. First we clapped along to the
rhythm of 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star'.
After we had learnt the pattern, we used clave
sticks to tap along to the pattern. It was great
using the sticks as some of us had used them
before!

'I like using the sticks - they are like rakau sticks that we used with Miss Donnell.'

This term Room 4 have been learning about
shapes. We have been learning about how to
sort shapes and what different shapes look like.

Miss Donnell took us outside to test our knowledge
on what shapes we know. She gave us some
chalk to try and draw the shapes we knew. Then
she said shapes out loud like rectangle, triangle,
a shape with 3 sides and we had to try and draw
them!

'I can draw lots of different shapes. I like using chalk!'

WALT read back our writing.

This term we have been learning about how to write
awesome stories. We started by drawing pictures and
talking about our ideas. Then we started writing our ideas
down in a sentence. We have even started using full stops!
When we come and see Miss Donnell we check that our
work makes sense by reading it to her.

WALT sketch self portraits

Room 4 have been learning about drawing self-portraits. We started by sketching a picture of our face and neck.
Then we used pastels to colour ourselves in. The last part was the border! We used corrugated cardboard to design a cool pattern around our portraits. Check out my awesome work!

WALT identify numbers to 5

WALT identify numbers to 5

The Dolphins group have been working on identifying numbers to 5. Once we connected the number itself and the number word, we started looking at what that number looked like. Miss Donnell showed us a game called 'Roll and Cover' which helped us to match the dice patterns to the numbers.

'The hard number to find is 5 because it looks like 4 on the dice.'

WALT identify parts of a book e.g title, author.

WALT identify parts of a book e.g title, author.

We have been looking in our reading identify the different parts of a book. So far we have identified the front cover, back cover, spine, title and author. We are always looking to find new parts of a book to learn about, especially in non-fiction stories.

'The title is the big one, that is easy to remember.'
